Switzerland: Gender in conflict & peacebuilding training

Get insights in gender equality in peacebuilding and apply a gender perspective on conflicts.

Course topic

How do gender roles change during phases of violent conflict and war? And how does this affect peacebuilding processes? Conflict has a profound impact on gender relations and contests accepted gender roles, providing space for transformative action for gender equality in post-conflict reconstruction. Peacebuilding does not always foster gender equality when advocated through normative frameworks, such as the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women or the UN Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. Specific endeavors must therefore address gender power relations and roles systematically at all levels and in all phases of peacebuilding. Participants examine the gender-specific dimensions of conflict and peacebuilding. They reflect critically on the notions of masculinity, violence and militarism in wartime as well as on the discourses on women as actors and victims of war.

The course is designed for practitioners and academics interested in bridging their own experiences with current conceptual insights and practical knowledge on gender and peacebuilding.

Structure & methodology

This 2-day course (Friday/Saturday) is part of the thematic module of the CAS Civilian Peacebuilding Essentials, a postgraduate program that is offered annually by swisspeace and the University of Basel and runs from September to August.

Course methodologies include expert inputs, peer exchange, case studies, exercises, skills training and self-study.

Certification

Successful participants are awarded a Confirmation of Participation. This course can be taken as one module (1 ECTS) of the Certificate of Advanced Studies in Civilian Peacebuilding Essentials program offered by swisspeace and the University of Basel.
